Gastech 2024: Transitioning to a Low-carbon Future

Gastech 2024: Transitioning to a Low-carbon Future

Gastech 2024 once again reaffirmed its position as one of the world’s leading events shaping the future and collaboration in the energy sector.

This year’s event saw an unprecedented number of high-profile visits, including top energy executives and important ministers, even former U.S. President George W. Bush. Their presence underscored Gastech’s growing importance as a venue for signing major contracts and shaping energy policies toward a low-carbon future.

LNG is here to stay

While traditional pipeline gas projects took a backseat, the spotlight was firmly on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its greater importance in global markets. The focus was on technological innovations and improvements in operational efficiency in the liquefaction, regasification, and transportation of LNG. The main theme of Gastech was: LNG is here to stay, so let’s make it work as effectively as possible.

Innovation played a central role as the industry increasingly adopts digital solutions, automation, and advanced data analytics to streamline operations and reduce costs. Developing energy-efficient ships, better cryogenic equipment, predictive maintenance, and leakage prevention have emerged as highly sought-after capabilities.

Ammonia and hydrogen technologies were also in the spotlight, showing that these energy sources are no longer viewed as novelties but are increasingly recognized as integral components of the energy mix and ones that could benefit from leaps forward in the LNG domain. Interestingly, while AI was present in discussions, it did not dominate the conversation as some might have expected.

Sustainability and decarbonization

Sustainability and decarbonization were omnipresent themes, moving beyond mere buzzwords to become central topics of serious discussion and commitment. Companies presented strategies and technologies to reduce environmental impact, including measures to reduce emissions and decarbonize operations. Smart metering and tracking, as well as reporting greenhouse gas emissions and compliance, are becoming increasingly important. The commitment to a low-carbon future was evident in the discussions around preventing gas flaring and leakages, with a strong emphasis on quantifying and transparently addressing these inefficiencies.

Another hot topic was Africa’s ascendancy as a potential energy source for Europe. This trend is expected to continue, with countries like Mauritania and Senegal joining Nigeria and potentially playing increasingly significant roles in diversifying energy sources and enhancing energy security for markets like Europe.

Our team had interesting conversations about how to operate and excel in the LNG business through the power of digital. Emissions tracking, reporting, and reduction, especially in maritime, but also increasing operational efficiency in production and equipment manufacturing, were significant parts of the discussions. Modernizing existing platforms, increasing the digital footprint, and making sense of all the data were some of the common challenges that many stakeholders face.

We were happy to see a huge interest in our latest solution, the greenhouse gas emissions calculator. The GHG Calculator empowers organizations to drive sustainable change from within, leveraging NFRD and CSRD regulatory compliance opportunities. Participants were interested in seeing how they can collect and track their Scope 1,2,3 emissions, set reduction goals, and understand and monetize their environmental impact.

The Gastech exhibition was a unique opportunity for our team to exchange knowledge and ideas about the global gas and LNG industry. We are eager to build upon the insightful conversations we had and take part in the transition to a low-carbon future.
