Web-Farm-Migration - The Case Study

The Client

One of the Largest Telecos in Bulgaria offers a full range of services: mobile, fixed and data, to over 4.0 million active subscribers. The company is part of a larger telecom operators group, operating in more than 10 countries in Europe.

The Case

The Telecom took the initiative to migrate the legacy Oracle Web Farm (Oracle Fusion Middleware), a project which was also aligned with the performed rebranding after the acquisition by the larger telecom operator. The AS-IS software infrastructure contained multiple Oracle solutions, which versions were outdated and vendor (Oracle) support was not allowed anymore.

Furthermore, the legacy architecture was not aligned with the business needs of the Telecom and was not able to meet the standards for the local customer’s service. The solutions hosted by the Web Farm are several customer-facing portals, which are critical to the Company’s business, including the main B2C self-care portal.

The Migration

ScaleFocus covered the entire project lifecycle, starting with an audit of the current Web Farm and proposing the most suitable solution. ScaleFocus performed a proof of concept, based on which were provided concepts, architecture, components, processes, and procedures, required to execute the project. The services provided by ScaleFocus included the design and delivery of the new Web Farm infrastructure, including the configuration and deployment of the new Application Servers (Oracle WebLogic), Web Cache Servers (Oracle Web Cache) and Web Servers (Oracle HTTP Server). The resulting Web Farm is fully redundant between the sites, in active-active topology scheme, providing high availability of the platforms in case of disaster.

As a part of the rebranding initiative, ScaleFocus was responsible for refactoring and optimization of the source code of the current Company’s web self-service portal, for the implementation of a rebranding of the portal and refactoring and rebranding of other PHP and MySQL-based portals, serving marketing purposes. ScaleFocus’ team optimized and developed further payments, invoices, balance management, order management (pre-paid and voice & data packages). The front end-side is PHP based, the b2b part – Java/JavaScript based. The solution uses a modern HTML5-based responsive design, adjusted to meet the Corporate security and design practices.

After successful completion of all phases, ScaleFocus organized pieces of training for Telco’s IT personnel to complete knowledge transfer. Currently, ScaleFocus is responsible for a 24×7 support and enhancements (new features) of both the WebFarm (infrastructure support) and Another (software support) solution.
